Meet Evelia Rios, December Educator of the Month

12.01.2016

Why did you decide to become a hairstylist?

I enjoy working with my guests one-on-one and building relationships and loyalty with them. I’m a visual person, so the craft brings me satisfaction when I transform my guests and make them feel great at the same time.

What inspires you?

Education events give me the inspiration and challenge I need to move forward. It’s also a way to meet great educators. This year, I attended the Sola Sessions in Denver, which is an inspirational event offered to Sola Salon Studio owners. I met a list of wonderful hair industry gurus that had a ton to share. I also did a two-day Aquage Academy training in Chicago. The workshop was an intense updo formal styling event with the great Luis Alvarez. Lastly, I just attended a Premier event with Candy Shaw, the balayage queen. I’ve been busy!

What iconic hairstyles do you love?

As times change, I keep up with the trends, so I don't specifically have a favorite, but updos are on the top of my lists of favorites. I love how you can create a softer look and add extensions to dress it up.

How has Hotheads changed your business behind the chair?

Adding Hotheads Extensions to my list of services has, in a sense, given me a raise. Having my own studio and being self-employed, I'm always on the lookout for new trends to keep me on top of the beauty industry. Within your own book of business, there will always be someone looking for a new look, whether you’re customizing extensions for length, color, volume or just plain fun.

What has educating taught you?

As an educator, consistency and patience have helped me along the way in teaching my classes. When you teach, you have to have a rhythm and stay on topic.

What's your favorite Hotheads product?

Hotheads carries several amazing retail and backbar products as well as tools for correct placement of the extensions. I have three favorites: the Small Styling Rattail Brush, Remove Extensions Solvent Solution and the Silky Smooth Hydrating Masque.

The brush does a great job of untangling without damaging and allows you to make nice, clean sections. The solvent is a gentle remover spray working efficiently. The masque is an intensive conditioning treatment for all hair types that leaves hair with renewed shine and nourishment.

Anything else you'd like to share?

Educating has given me the opportunity to travel and check out other great hair salons and learn from other hairstylists within my Chicago market. I love to incorporate small ideas I see along the way.
