Meet Angie Sullivan, July Educator of the Month

07.01.2019

Angie Sullivan is an educator with Hotheads. Her excitement for teaching is why we’ve selected her as Premier Beauty’s July Educator of the Month!

How’d you get your start in education?

My clients would always tell me that I was great at breaking things down in a way that they understood and should consider teaching, so I signed up to become an educator. I’m actually licensed as a teacher in my state, so it was a natural fit to start teaching in the hair industry.

What’s your favorite product from Hotheads?

I love Colormelts 4/20 CM - Dark Brown to Light Ash Blonde. It’s hard to achieve an ashy highlight with brown hair—it tends to turn orange. Colormelts 4/20 gives a perfect, naturally ashy look.

What's the newest, freshest approach you're bringing to education?

I am all about encouraging the class to be interactive. I love to share my excitement about the industry, and I think that really comes across in an engaging way to make learning fun. Teaching shouldn’t ever be a one-sided conversation.

What are the common problems faced by stylists today?

It’s easy for stylists with an established clientele to forget that they still need to keep their skills fresh and stand out from the competition. They’ve been doing the same thing for a long time and don’t see that there’s any need for change, or they might even recognize that it’s time to do something differently, but they’re not sure where to start; this is why education is so important.

The more education you get, the better you will be. For those that aren’t sure where to start, pick a class that you already know something about as a way to re-energize your passion. Work your way into more challenging courses from there.

What do you want stylists to know about education?

You can’t ever have enough. If you take just one thing away from a class, it’s worth it. That’s one thing you didn’t know before.

Any advice for educators?

Be mindful of the atmosphere in the room. If the students are starting to get shifty, or are looking at their phones, you need to be able to adjust your approach to re-engage them.

What are your educator goals?

I would love to teach the more advanced Hotheads 360 courses!

What new skill would you like to learn?

I am very interested in higher certifications for thinning hair and hair loss. I would love to learn how to use extensions to address these issues.

Outside of the industry, it is my goal to learn how to make wine and own a vineyard!
