Daniel Price, GOLD.KEY Educator with KEVIN.MURPHY, is Premier Beauty’s December Educator of the Month.
Daniel Price, GOLD.KEY KEVIN.MURPHY Educator, wants his students to have fun and enjoy learning, and that’s why we’ve selected him as Premier Beauty’s December Educator of the Month!
How’d you get your start in education?
Education has always been my passion. I originally went to school for theater education, but moved away from this and became a product knowledge educator for a cosmetics company. This led me to cosmetology school.
I took a KEVIN.MURPHY class and the educator happened to mention that they were in need of more educators, so I quickly started pursuing that path.
What’s your favorite product from KEVIN.MURPHY?
I always start my clients out on
ANTI.GRAVITY.SPRAY and
MAXI.WASH, so it’s a toss-up.
I love that ANTI.GRAVITY.SPRAY is so multi-functional; it’s perfect for giving a look that extra oomph, and also works great as a dry shampoo, freshening up bed head with just a blow-dry.
MAXI.WASH takes everything out of hair—product buildup and all the stuff we don’t think about as accumulating in our hair.
What's the newest, freshest approach you're bringing to education?
As a Southerner, my teaching style is very different. I’m super personable and take a light-hearted approach to educate my students. I want them to have a good time and enjoy learning about the beauty and the art we’re creating as stylists. I love to inspire my students and get the products into their hands, so they can really experience it, versus just reading or hearing about it.
What are the common problems faced by stylists today?
A lot of stylists struggle with getting the product into their client’s hands. Not all clients see hair products as something they should spend their money on, so it’s really about making the client feel confident—not just in the product itself, but more importantly, in themselves, so they are able to see the value in it and overcome any guilt they might have.
I always introduce clients to the full hair care regimen with
KMX (KEVIN.MURPHY Experience) at the backbar. As I go through the process, I explain what product I’m using and why.
If they are hesitant about purchasing a product, minis (or even sachets) are a great introduction; nine out of 10 times, the client will come back for the full-size product.
Any advice for educators?
Lighten up and have fun with teaching; just be yourself! Read the room and be aware of when people are starting to become distracted so you can re-engage them. Encourage questions and have fun with it! I always say that no two of my classes are the same.
What new skill would you like to learn?
Hand-tied extensions are becoming popular, so I would really like to learn more about hand tying. Outside of the beauty industry, I’m kind of a Renaissance man and always busy learning something new—I’m currently in culinary school!
